PHILOSOPHY: STUDY APPROACH & PEDAGOGY

“…We all have spent many years studying and memorizing... Have we really learned much? How much do we remember from high school or college subjects? The truth is: very little”.

 

The key to successful learning is in the type of mental process that takes place when we extract information from a text and how we have to reprocess and express it in the form of written work. Studying becomes an active phenomenon that enables comprehension (reading and search for data), new mental schemata (concepts hierarchy and interrelation), and input transformation (data reorganization and writing). The newly acquired thinking structures do not rely on classic memorization and help to increase our reasoning capacity and problem-solving skills. Excel Research University “ERUNIV” will not become simple life training; it becomes a permanent absorption of newly acquired materials and skills. Most universities' pedagogical methods are based on memorization and testing. Unfortunately, these are actually teaching methods and not learning ones. Thinking transforms information into knowledge because In order to transform any new bit of information into knowledge, we have to activate the process of thinking. Thinking integrates data through synthesis, analogy, and deduction thus generating the knowledge and enabling problem solving.

The Excel Research University Full-time Learning Education does not imply painful memorization. Instead, it teaches students to think critically and increase their intellectual capacity. Modular System provides the student with a private and personal learning experience through the industrial visits conducted throughout each module (course). What is assessed is the student's thinking process and not his memorization of data. Excel Research University's innovative methodology makes studying achievable, time-effective, flexible, convenient and highly productive. Students are initiated to the research methodology and research papers form their first semester in order to integrate them in interdisciplinary research.

The Excel Research University Distance Learning (+ face-face sessions) emphasizes quality and not quantity. It draws its concept from real-life experiences and content-specific material, and avoids superfluous details. Thus, students efficiently achieve full command of real-life skills in different areas as well as practical application of the acquired know-how.

The ERUNIV distance-learning program mainly embraces two approaches. The first approach is a documentary review of documents on open and distance education in higher education in the country. This will cover study materials, and reports, study guides that give a gestalt view in a general context of the modules or courses that will be studied as well as information about examination schedules, contact programs, student’s assignments and so forth. The second approach includes holding face-to-face discussions with some key stakeholders within and outside the country in open and distance education in higher education at the Excel Research University’s campuses or study centers across the country. 

JOINING FORCES WITH THE GOVERNMENT 

ERUNIV will continue to join forces with the government to contribute to the national development since in the institution’s philosophy we agree the following:

  • The impact of globalization in higher education leads to increased competition for financial and human resources. The capacity to attract R&D funding and the most talented academics at the international level is a key to growth in academic performance and competitiveness.
  • Global challenges such as health and the quality of life, energy sustainability and food security put new demands on universities, as does the Knowledge Economy’s need for innovation in order to spur the creation of jobs and economic growth. Global challenges require universities to develop interdisciplinary approaches and to interact more effectively with key stakeholders in industry and government.
  • A further differentiation in the mission and provision of higher education is needed in order to better respond to the increasingly diverse needs of students, employers, business and industry, and society at large.

The main aim of the Excel Research University is to make Zambia a hub for international competitiveness and academic excellence. The results envisaged are:

  • Attracting more highly talented students and academics from around Africa; 

  • Attracting more competitive research funding from internal and other external sources; 

  • Providing a stronger knowledge base for the region, in terms of relevance for the 
innovative potential of business and industry, i.e. the creation of new products, 
companies and jobs; 

  • Delivering a larger and better-qualified supply of higher education graduates to the 
regional workforce to attract and retain firms and investment in the region. 
 

MODULAR SYSTEM: RATIONALE 

  1. ERUNIV teaching and learning system, “Modular System”, lies on equipping our students with 
effective tools which will enable them to translate the knowledge acquired into performance and competence. Modular System of teaching is a recent development based on programmed learning; a well-established and universally recognized phenomenon. It considers the individual differences among the learners that necessitate the planning for adoption of the most appropriate teaching techniques in order to help the individual grow and develop at her/his own pace. Module is a unit of work in a course of instruction that is virtually self-contained and a method of teaching that is based on the building up skills and knowledge in discrete units. All subjects are taught through modules.


The University's Modular System of education for effective living is designed to provide common experiences that are needed by all citizens. The program's objectives are to encourage students to think clearly, creatively, and critically about those problems confronting the individual and society; to stimulate students to seek more knowledge, to develop more tolerance, and to acquire greater awareness of the world community; to assist students in making contributions to the groups of which society is composed; 
 and to foster within students the desire to continue the pursuit of knowledge whereby a better understanding of self and society is afforded.

  1. ERUNIV is based on research-intensive teaching and learning at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Future research solutions will need to transcend and expand traditional views, and innovative trans-disciplinary research will be of the utmost importance. The aim of Excel Research University is to become a center of excellence in the region, where knowledge transmitted to students is fueled and instigated by skills for competence, creativity and innovation. Gaps/needs in local industry and labor market, human development and innovative entrepreneurship are the driving motives and basis for the university curriculum design and development. 

 

ADMISSION: REQUIREMENTS, TRANSFERS, EXEMPTIONS AND EXCEPTIONS 

 

Every individual who applies for admission to and enrolls in Excel Research University must meet:

(A) Either the minimum entry requirements aligned with the HEA (Higher Education Authority of Zambia) standards or the indirect route explained below:

  1. Direct Entry Level: applicants with G.C.E Secondary School Certificate with a minimum of 5 credits or equivalent are admitted if only they pass university entrance exam. Those who fail our entrance exam join our Pre-university (Bridging) Program; 

  2. Upgrade Entry Level: applicants with Pre-university program certificate (Art Domain and Science Domain). 
Pre-University Program (Bridging) is designed for individuals who have been away from formal education for some time and do not meet the University’s 
established requirements for direct entry admission; the course is intended to bridge the gap between a student’s prior education and the requirements of first year university modules. Students who successfully complete the Pre-University Program are admitted to first year in the faculty they applied for.
  3. Mature Entry Level: mature experienced workers are admitted in the related field of their work experience and are subject to pass the entrance exam.

This entry scheme is reserved mainly to the working individuals who need some special skills and competence in order to upgrade their performance and delivery through our Executive degree program and/or industrial/professional programs.

  1. Credit transfer Level: students from other Higher Learning Institutions are admitted based on their previous academic records and credit transfer policy. Same procedures apply for diploma holder applicants.

The acceptance of transfer credits between institutions is at the discretion of the receiving college or university. Students who wish to transfer credits to Excel Research University must request a review of their prior coursework when they apply for admission. This review serves as a guide for determining the remaining coursework required for the student to complete his/her desired program of study.

 

Students wishing to transfer Excel Research University credits to another institution should check first with that institution regarding their policy on transfer credit. Module content and instructional quality varies across institutions and, because of this, the University does not consider grade points for work completed at other colleges or universities;

  1. Integrated Level: graduates from other Higher Learning Institutions are admitted based on credit transfer policy. Same procedures apply for professional/industrial certificates holder applicants;

(B) A “PASS” of ERUNIV Entrance exam is mandatory to every applicant. No direct entry admission is offered without passing successfully the entrance exam.

Excel Research University’s purpose of specialized education is to develop the technical and professional competencies of individuals in order that they meet the demands and requirements of modern professions. ERUNIV will be committed to quality education in six levels in conjunction with partnering overseas Universities and accredited research centers: 

  • Pre-university (Bridging) Program
  • Advanced Industrial and Integrated Professional Programs
  • Undergraduate Level Program
  • Executive Degree Programs (for Managers, CEOs, Directors, Leaders and Local Authorities)
  • Corporate Mentorship Program (CPM)
  • Innovative Trans-disciplinary Research and Publication
